Nature's Influence: How Earthy Textures Inspire My Art

Published by: Carl Urwiler | October 27, 2023

When it comes to my art, I’m drawn to the appeal in imperfection—the way time, nature, and wear transform materials into something far more interesting than when they were new. The inspiration behind my paintings comes from the textures and patterns found in weathered wood, rusted metal, stone, and the grungy surfaces that most would overlook. Aged things tell stories, revealing layers of history and character.

In this post, I’ll explore how these elements make up the bulk of what I like to paint and how I use them to show case how awesome texure and pattern can be as an abstract painting.

The Rough Edges

I’m drawn to the rough edges and the textures that tell a story. There’s something compelling about the way things age—how weathered painted wood, rusted metal, and grungy, worn surfaces transform over time, taking on new layers of character. What might have once seemed old and unsightly becomes something beautiful, rich with history and personality.

Modern abstract painting by Carl UrwilerI find this contrast particularly powerful when these rugged, imperfect elements are set against the backdrop of clean, polished living spaces. The juxtaposition of the raw and unrefined with the sleek and modern brings out the depth and complexity of each. The weathered surfaces, with their cracks, chips, and rust, provide a bold counterbalance to the smooth, pristine lines of contemporary interiors, creating a dialogue between old and new, chaos and order, that I strive to capture in my work.

Earthy Textures in My Paintings

In addition to weathered wood, I’m deeply inspired by stone and rusted metal. The natural patterns and colors found in stone, like the rich veining of marble or the raw textures of granite, are fascinating to me. They remind me of how nature shapes and transforms over time, creating something complex and beautiful. Rusted metal, with its evolving surface, changing from shiny and new to aged and worn, also speaks to the passage of time. The way rust creates unexpected patterns and textures adds a sense of rawness and unpredictability that I love to explore in my paintings.

Finding Inspiration in the Unlikeliest Places

Through my paintings, I aim to elevate these weathered details—turning what might seem rough or broken into something meaningful and full of life. It’s this play of contrast, the worn versus the polished, that drives my creative process and inspires me to bring a sense of history and depth to modern spaces. By incorporating the earthy tones and patterns of stone, along with the gritty textures of rusted metal, I strive to capture the essence of time’s passage in my work, celebrating the beauty found in life’s imperfections.

Painting with the Freedom of No-Rules

What I love most about drawing inspiration from nature is that it allows me to embrace the freedom of no-rules. Nature doesn’t adhere to any rigid guidelines or artistic conventions, and this sense of boundless creativity is something I aim to capture in my work. It’s about interpreting the natural world through a unique perspective, breaking the boundaries of traditional art forms, and letting my imagination run free.

In my work, I strive to capture the beauty in the details most often overlooked—the way time leaves its mark on materials like stone, metal, and wood. These elements, worn and weathered, tell a story of transformation, resilience, and the passage of time. By blending these natural textures with abstract forms, I hope to invite viewers to see the unexpected richness and depth that comes from embracing imperfection. It’s in the cracks, rust, and weathered surfaces that we find the true essence of time’s influence, and through my art, I seek to celebrate these quiet, powerful stories.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure!
